Fly! II and Windows 10

Message par KenWood »

Greetings all,

It has been a long time since I have posted, but am curious to know if anyone here is using their Fly! II still, and if one might have been able to get it working under the new Windows 10 OS? I relegated my Fly! II install to my one laptop, but as it does not have an internal DVD drive, I appear to be unable to return it to Windows 8.1 OS from Windows 10 upgrade (which is past the time to restore from the windows.old method).

Any help would be appreciated.

Merci'!

Hi Ken,
I have posted a similar question on the Fly Forum at AVSIM.
I have installed WIN10 but whilst MSFS X and 2004 work there is a Graphics problem with Fly 2 in that the screen flickers making use of it impossible.
Whether it is due to the Direct X installed with WIN 10 I have not investigated.
Hopefully someone will answer our questions.
I shall try to adjust settings etc in Fly 2 when I have time but I am no computer guru and my time is very limited.
Good to hear from you and kindest regards.

Hi Ian - good to hear from you again! Been quite some time!

Yes, I am concluding that it has to do with DX 11 which appears to have no backwards compatibility with DX 8, which was the latest version Fly! II supported. Appears DX 10 and 9 supported backwards compatibility, and problem I run into is no ability to load in DX 9 or 10 with 11 already on the system. This conclusion is because we know majority of us that used Win 7 and 8 were still able to run Fly! II then. And something tells me that even if we were able to somehow install DX9 onto the Win10 system, it will not help.

I too, shall continue to investigate and see what may turn up.

Cheers!

Hi Ken,
I vaguely recall seeing something suggesting that it is possible to also install an earlier version of Direct X on a WIN 10 system.
Is it be possible to have an earlier version of Windows on a separate partition on a computer?

Like you I shall keep looking for a solution.
At least I have my old PC running WIN XP still if the worst comes to the worst!

kind regards,
Ian

Hi Ian,
Yes, one can set up a dual boot system, but I would hazard a guess one needs a rather large HDD to create a separate partition in order to load the OS and any programs that way. I know for my Fly! II install alone was nearly 14GB, plus you would need to have saved the SP updates along the way. PCWorld website offers a "how-to" on setting up a dual boot system of Win 7 and Win 10. I would think it applies to Win 8 as well. I just did a Google search and found that site and several others offering help in setting up a dual boot system. For our particular issue, am guessing this is about the only way to do it now.

Cheers!

Good news.
Not long ago installed Win 10 Anniversary.
Have just flown a circuit around LFMN with no apparent problems.
